ASI caught red-handed taking rs 10,000 bribe, Vigilance launches probe

Bhubaneswar, June 4: In a major anti-corruption action, Odisha Vigilance today apprehended Babita Suna, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Mahila Police Station in Berhampur, for demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹10,000.
According to Vigilance sources, ASI Suna was the investigating officer in a case registered earlier against a complainant and his mother at the Mahila police station. She allegedly demanded the bribe in exchange for extending undue favour to the complainant and his mother and threatened to arrest him if the money was not paid.
Feeling harassed and helpless, the complainant approached the Vigilance authorities, who immediately laid a trap. Acting swiftly on the complaint, Vigilance sleuths caught ASI Suna red-handed today while she was accepting the bribe amount of ₹10,000. The entire bribe money was recovered from her possession and seized as evidence.
Following the arrest, simultaneous searches were launched at two locations linked to ASI Suna to probe any disproportionate assets. A case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 has been registered. Further investigation is underway.
