Low-pressure area forms over Bay of Bengal, heavy rain predicted in Odisha and West Bengal

Bhubaneswar, May 27: A low-pressure area has formed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, just off the Odisha coast, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system, which developed around 8:30 AM today, is expected to move slowly northward and intensify further into a well-marked low-pressure system over the next 48 hours.
The IMD stated that the system is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilting southward with height—an indication of increasing intensity. As a result, coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, with isolated areas receiving heavy showers.
The weather system has already brought widespread rainfall to parts of Odisha since Tuesday morning. The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall across many districts on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the wet spell expected to continue until May 30.
Additionally, the southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Odisha within the next two days, aligning closely with the normal arrival date of June 1. Authorities are monitoring the system closely.
