Odisha confirms first COVID-19 case in Capital; Health Dept urges calm as patient recovers

Bhubaneswar, May 22: Following the detection of the first COVID-19 case in the state capital, the Odisha Health and Family Welfare Department has called for calm, assuring residents that the situation is under control and the patient is in stable condition.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the department, Aswathy S., addressed the media on Thursday, emphasizing that there is no immediate threat to public health.
“Currently, we have no formal advisory in place, but we are closely monitoring the situation. The available data suggests that the prevailing strain is mild, with low severity. There is no reason for alarm. The state health machinery is fully in control,” she stated.
Reassuring the public, Aswathy reiterated that “there is no need to panic,” noting that no official guidelines have been issued by the Centre at this point.
She confirmed that strict surveillance is ongoing, and any new instructions from the Government of India will be implemented promptly. The patient who tested positive is reported to be recovering well, and the new variant does not show signs of heightened severity.
“This is an isolated case. There is no cluster outbreak or indication of rising transmission. The severity of the strain remains low and the situation has not escalated,” she added.
