NHRC seeks probe into woman’s death in lift collapse at Bhadrak District Hospital

Bhubaneswar, May 12: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Bhadrak District Collector to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragic death of a 55-year-old woman at the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital. The incident occurred on April 24, 2025, when a lift reportedly collapsed while the patient was being transferred to the first-floor ward.
The NHRC’s intervention follows a petition filed by human rights activist Manoj Jena, who alleged gross negligence on the part of the hospital. According to the complaint, the woman, who was suffering from respiratory issues, had no medical staff available to assist her transfer. Her daughter-in-law and grandson attempted to take her up using a stretcher through the hospital lift. Tragically, the stretcher became stuck, and the lift collapsed, leading to her immediate death. Shockingly, her body remained trapped in the lift shaft for over five hours.
Taking serious note of the complaint, the NHRC has asked the District Collector to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks of receiving its notice. The complainant has demanded accountability and strict action against those responsible.
