Southwest monsoon likely to hit south Andaman Sea by May 13: IMD

Bhubaneswar, May 7: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon is likely to make its early advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands around May 13. This development indicates that the 2025 monsoon season may arrive slightly ahead of its usual schedule.
Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das confirmed the forecast via social media, stating, “By the 13th, the southwest monsoon is likely to touch South Andaman! Weather conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the South Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands.”
The southwest monsoon typically begins its journey over the South Andaman Sea around May 19, and officially arrives over the Indian mainland around June 1 in Kerala. It then progresses northwards in phases, covering the entire country by July 15.
Earlier, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra had indicated that the monsoon is expected to follow a normal onset and progression this year. The early signs of monsoon advancement have raised hopes for timely rainfall crucial to agriculture and water availability across India.
