Odisha software engineer attempts suicide after losing Rs 6 lakh in online gaming

Bhubaneswar, April 19: In a tragic incident, a 44-year-old software engineer from Odisha attempted suicide after incurring heavy financial losses through online gaming. The victim, identified as Sarbajit Ray from Teghari village under Raibania police station limits in Balasore district, had reportedly lost around Rs 6 lakh while playing the online game .
Ray had previously worked in Chennai as a software engineer but had recently quit his job and returned to his native village, where he was running a tuition centre to support his family. Initially, he lost Rs 20,000 in the online game. However, in a desperate attempt to recover the loss, he continued playing, only to lose a much larger sum. The mounting financial pressure severely impacted his mental health.
In a state of distress, Sarbajit allegedly tried to take his own life by slashing his throat and wrist with a blade. His family members found him in a critical condition and immediately rushed him to JK Bhavatar Hospital in Jaleswar. He was later shifted to Fakir Mohan Medical College in Balasore for advanced treatment.
Ray’s wife and 7-year-old daughter are left devastated by the incident, as the family now faces emotional and financial turmoil.
