Nepal's Dipendra Singh smashes Yuvraj's 16-year-old record with 9-ball fifty
New Delhi, Sep 27: In a remarkable feat witnessed during the ongoing Asian Games, Dipendra Singh Airee of Nepal achieved the fastest fifty in T20 cricket history, smashing Yuvraj Singh's 16-year-old record set during the 2007 T20 World Cup match against England.
During a group match at the Pingfeng Cricket Field, Dipendra exhibited his explosive batting prowess by scoring an unbeaten 52 runs from a mere 10 balls against Mongolia. His record-breaking knock featured an astonishing eight sixes.
Nepal went on to post an imposing total of 314/3 against Mongolia, becoming the first team to breach the 300-run mark in a T20 innings. Additionally, Kushal Malla made headlines by setting a new record for the fastest T20I century, reaching a century in just 34 balls. This achievement surpassed Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma's previous record of 35 balls.
In response, Mongolia struggled and was bundled out for a mere 41 runs in 13.1 overs, resulting in Nepal securing a historic 273-run victory, the largest margin in T20 Internationals to date.
Before Dipendra's extraordinary performance, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh had held the record for the fastest T20 fifty for almost 16 years. Yuvraj's unforgettable innings occurred during the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, where he reached a half-century in just 12 balls. This remarkable feat remains the fastest 50 in T20 World Cup history and included three fours and seven sixes, with six of those sixes coming in a single over bowled by Stuart Broad, marking a historic moment in T20 cricket.
