Sambalpur SP orders probe into custodial death of accused

Bhubaneswar, March 18: Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo has appointed a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)-rank officer to investigate the death of an accused who reportedly collapsed while being produced before the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court on Tuesday.
The deceased, Kadir Mohammad Sheikh, a 27-year-old resident of Christianpada, was arrested on March 16, 2025, in connection with a case registered at Hirakud Police Station under Sections 331(4)/305 of BNS. As per police reports, Sheikh underwent a medical examination at Hirakud Community Health Centre, where he was declared fit before being taken to court.
However, while being produced before the SDJM Court, Sheikh suddenly felt uneasy and lost consciousness. He was immediately shifted to Sambalpur District Headquarters Hospital and later referred to VIMSAR in Burla, where doctors declared him dead.
Following SP Bhamoo’s directive, Burla police have registered a case and a DSP-rank officer has been assigned to conduct a thorough investigation into Sheikh’s sudden death.
