Another farmer dies amid distress over crop damage in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: Unable to cope with losses caused by unseasonal rains, another farmer from Odisha has tragically lost his life. Indrajit Chatoi, 48, a farmer from Niali block in Cuttack district, passed away on Sunday, reportedly due to a major heart attack after witnessing the extensive damage to his ready-to-harvest paddy crop.
According to family members, Indrajit had visited his fields and was deeply stressed over how he would support his family following the destruction of his crops. That evening, he returned home, had dinner, and went to bed. The next morning, when his family tried to wake him, he was unresponsive. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him brought dead.
This marks the second such tragedy in the district. Earlier, 75-year-old farmer Kailash Pradhan also succumbed to a heart attack after experiencing similar distress.
The incidents highlight the growing emotional and financial toll of unseasonal rains on vulnerable farmers, sparking urgent calls for government intervention.
