Cold wave grips Odisha; IMD forecasts rain and rising night temperatures

Bhubaneswar, Dec 16: As Odisha battles an intense cold wave, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. This system is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall to parts of the state starting Tuesday.
Rainfall is likely in isolated places across Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, and Rayagada districts, with southern Odisha, including Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri, expected to experience light to moderate rain by the weekend.
The IMD also forecasts a gradual rise in night temperatures by 3°C to 5°C across various parts of the state from Thursday. Additionally, light to moderate fog is expected in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, and Sundargarh within the next 24 hours.
On Sunday, the cold wave disrupted normal life, with 11 locations recording minimum temperatures below 10°C. Udayagiri registered the lowest temperature at 6.6°C, while Jharsuguda and Rourkela recorded 6.8°C. Other notable readings included Daringibari and Phulbani (8.5°C), Angul (9°C), Sundargarh and Bhawanipatna (9.4°C), and Bolangir (10.7°C). Bhubaneswar recorded a relatively warmer 13°C.
