Puri coast faces 10-day fishing ban ahead of Navy Day celebrations
Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: The Puri district administration has imposed a 10-day fishing ban along the Puri coast in the Bay of Bengal, effective from November 26 to December 5, to facilitate preparations for the upcoming Navy Day celebrations.
Puri Marine Fishery Officer Ramesh Raul stated that only about 5% of fishermen are currently at sea, and they have been directed to return by Tuesday evening. Other fishermen have been instructed not to venture into the sea until the ban ends.
The highlight of the Navy Day celebration, scheduled for December 4, will be a grand demonstration of India’s maritime capabilities at Puri’s Blue Flag beach. The event will feature 24 warships, 40 aircraft, helicopters, and fighter jets, with President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, attending as the chief guest.
However, local fishermen, including the Puri District Fishermen Union, have raised concerns about the ban’s impact on their livelihood. Representing over 50,000 fishermen, the union has submitted a memorandum to the district collector seeking reconsideration.
