Woman poisoned for dowry in Subarnapur; police launch investigation

Bhubaneswar, Nov 19: A newlywed woman, Anjali Mahakul, was allegedly poisoned to death for dowry in Charada village, under Binika police jurisdiction in Subarnapur district, on Tuesday.
Anjali, who hailed from Ghikundi village in Boudh district, had recently married Narendra Padhan. According to a complaint filed by her mother, Narendra began an affair with his sister-in-law shortly after the marriage. At the insistence of the sister-in-law, Narendra reportedly pressured Anjali to bring 3 bhari of gold ornaments and Rs 2 lakh as dowry. The complaint also accuses Anjali’s in-laws of torturing her and ultimately poisoning her to death for dowry.
As Anjali’s condition worsened, she was first admitted to the Binika Community Health Centre. Despite treatment, her health continued to deteriorate, leading to her transfer to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla. Unfortunately, doctors at VIMSAR declared her dead on Tuesday morning.
Following her death, Anjali’s mother lodged a formal complaint, and the Binika police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
