Cyclone 'Dana' sparks major evacuation effort across 11 Odisha districts

Bhubaneswar, Oct 24: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has informed that Cyclone ‘Dana’ is expected to impact 1,653 villages, nine towns, and 26 wards across 38 blocks in 11 districts. After a review meeting with district Collectors at Lok Seva Bhavan, Majhi provided updates on the government's preparedness efforts in areas including Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Cuttack, Khurda, and Jajpur.
A total of 362,000 people are being targeted for evacuation, with over 300,000 already relocated to cyclone shelters by 11 AM today. The Chief Minister expressed confidence in achieving 100% evacuation shortly. In addition, 2,338 pregnant women have been transferred to hospitals and Maa Gruha centers from high-risk areas.
The government has set up 7,285 shelters, including 842 permanent and 6,443 temporary facilities, in the affected districts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the situation and has assured full support, Majhi added.
To speed up the evacuation, experienced IAS officers have been deployed, and nine state cabinet ministers are overseeing the most vulnerable districts. Majhi has instructed District Magistrates to ensure complete evacuation, prevent casualties, maintain uninterrupted power in hospitals, secure fuel supplies, provide cooked meals at shelters, and ensure clean sanitation facilities.
