Captured leopard from Khariar finds new home in Sambalpur Zoo

Bhubaneswar, Oct 1: Sambalpur Zoo has introduced a male man-eater leopard, captured from Khariar in Nuapada district, into its newly expanded and renovated enclosure. The 8-year-old leopard, previously involved in human-wildlife conflict, will now share space with a 6-year-old female leopard, according to zoo sources.
The Central Zoo Authority’s (CZA) 111th Technical Committee approved the pairing following a recommendation from Odisha’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Wildlife. On September 9, 2024, the male leopard was introduced into the same night house as the female, with public display commencing on October 1, 2024.
Initially, the leopards will be alternately displayed for 2-3 months to ensure compatibility. They are housed in separate chambers within the night house to encourage bonding. Once they show signs of compatibility, they will be integrated.
For safety, CCTV cameras have been installed, and trained teams will conduct 24/7 monitoring. Continuous observation will ensure a smooth transition for the pair.
