Public Health Director assures Odisha residents: Chicken and eggs are now safe

Bhubaneswar, Sept 25: Public Health Director Dr. Neelkantha Mishra has said that the threat of bird flu is now behind us, and residents can consume chicken and eggs.
In a recent media briefing, Dr. Mishra acknowledged that while bird flu was reported in certain areas, particularly in Puri and Kendrapara districts, all affected chickens have been culled. He assured the public that there is currently no risk of infection, and the chicken and eggs available for consumption are safe.
Dr. Mishra emphasized that broiler chickens and eggs produced in the state are free from the H5N1 virus. He noted that bird flu outbreaks typically occur during this season and reassured, "There is no reason to worry. Cooking chicken thoroughly at high heat eliminates any concerns."
The poultry business had suffered significantly due to the bird flu outbreak, with chicken prices plummeting from Rs 200 to Rs 120-150 per kilo, resulting in a lack of buyers. However, following the recent assurances, customers are gradually returning to purchase chicken and eggs.
