Judicial probe prompts BJD to cancel Bhubaneswar protest over police misconduct

Bhubaneswar, Sept 23: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday reversed its decision to hold a six-hour shutdown in Bhubaneswar, originally scheduled for September 24, in protest of the assault on an army officer and his fiancée at Bharatpur police station.
BJD leader Arun Sahu announced the cancellation of the Bhubaneswar bandh at a press conference after the Odisha government ordered a judicial inquiry into the matter. The shutdown was initially planned to take place in Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas to condemn the police brutality incident.
However, following the Home Department’s formal notification for a judicial probe, the party decided to withdraw its protest. The inquiry will be conducted by Justice Chitta Ranjan Dash, a retired High Court judge. As per the notification, the commission has been tasked with investigating the alleged misconduct and is expected to submit its report within 60 days of the notification being published in the Odisha Gazette.
