Gajapati man pawns wife’s gold to buy phone, access Subhadra Yojana benefits

Bhubaneswar, Sept 12: A resident of Nuagada block in Gajapati district was forced to mortgage his wife’s gold ornaments to purchase a mobile phone so he could link her phone number with her Aadhaar card and receive OTPs to access benefits under the Subhadra Yojana scheme.
The incident came to light when the man shared his story while buying a phone and SIM card at a local shop, leaving the shopkeeper stunned.
Struggling to make ends meet due to a lack of work, the man explained that he had no choice but to pawn his wife’s jewelry. He is hopeful that the Subhadra Yojana, which provides financial assistance to women, will offer him relief. A video of his account has since gone viral, shedding light on the challenges marginalized communities face in accessing government benefits.
To apply for the scheme, linking Aadhaar with a mobile number is essential to receive the required OTP, and applicants must also ensure that their Aadhaar and mobile number are linked to their bank accounts.
