Fatal ambulance collision in Udala: Home Guard dead, IIC among four injured

Bhubaneswar, Sept 3: A tragic accident occurred late last night in Mayurbhanj district, resulting in the death of a Home Guard and critical injuries to four others, including the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Udala Police Station, when a 108 ambulance collided with a police van near Petrol Pump Square at Udala.
According to reports, officers had parked the police van on the roadside and were questioning a person when the ambulance suddenly appeared and crashed head-on into the van. The impact was so severe that the police van overturned three times and was dragged for some distance by the ambulance.
Eyewitnesses stated that the accident happened when the 108 ambulance was returning to Kaptipada from Baripada after dropping off a patient. The ambulance driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision.
The IIC, Banamali Barik, and the police van driver, Sadananda Singh, were seriously injured. Home Guard Laxmidhar Mahanta was crushed under the van and died on the spot. The ambulance driver, helper, and pharmacist Satyajit Panda, who was also in the ambulance, were critically injured.
All the injured were rushed to Udala Hospital for treatment. Due to their deteriorating condition, the IIC and the driver were later shifted to Baripada Hospital. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
