Odisha sees 59% surge in student suicides over three years

Bhubaneswar, Sept 3: Odisha has witnessed a troubling surge in student suicides, with a 59% increase in deaths between 2021 and 2023.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi shared this alarming data in response to a question by MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo, emphasizing the urgent need to address the rising issue of student suicides in the state.
According to the data presented in the state Assembly on Monday, 189 students died by suicide in 2023, up from 119 in 2021. Over the three-year period from 2021 to 2023, a total of 481 student suicides were recorded, affecting 218 boys and 263 girls.
The data revealed by CM Majhi showed that in 2021, 58 boys and 61 girls took their own lives, while in 2023, the numbers increased to 85 boys and 104 girls. In 2022, 173 students, including 75 boys and 98 girls, died by suicide across the state.
The statistics also highlighted a disproportionate rise in suicides among girls, with a 70% increase from 2021 to 2023. In contrast, the number of farmer suicides remained low, with only four cases reported during the same period.
