Odisha jail under scrutiny after inmate assault by gangster’s son

Bhubaneswar, Aug 2: The Odisha Inspector General (IG) of Prisons & Correctional Services on Monday ordered an investigation into a violent incident at Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar, where Munna, the son of gangster Haider, allegedly attacked an undertrial prisoner.
According to an official notification from the IG's office, the probe will be led by Prisons DIG Anusuya Jena.
Reports indicate that Munna, along with his associates, assaulted undertrial prisoner Soumyakant Mohanty on Sunday night following a dispute between them. Soumyakant suffered severe head injuries in the attack and was subsequently admitted to Capital Hospital.
In a police complaint, Soumyakant alleged that Munna and his accomplices brutally attacked him after he wrote to the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), exposing irregularities within the prison. His letter detailed the free sale and use of marijuana inside the facility and claimed that inmates were being forced to pay exorbitant amounts for basic amenities, including Rs 50,000 for proper accommodation, Rs 5,000 for telephone access, and Rs 10,000 per month for meeting with outsiders.
Following the letter, DLSA officials conducted a surprise inspection of the jail on Saturday, seizing mobile phones and drugs. Enraged by these developments, Munna and his associates allegedly attacked Soumyakant the following night.
