Odisha reports human bird flu case in Puri

Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: The Odisha Health Department has reported a human case of bird flu in Puri district. State Health Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling confirmed that the case was detected at the Mangalpur Community Health Center (CHC) in Puri.
In response, the Health Department has ramped up its surveillance and monitoring efforts in the affected areas, particularly in the Pipili and Satyabadi blocks, where an H5N1 outbreak is under close watch.
Dr. Mahaling stated, "A human case of bird flu has been detected at Mangalpur CHC in Puri district. A primary surveillance zone has been established within a 1 km radius, with a secondary zone extending up to 10 km. Our department is fully prepared, with ASHA workers conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns and distributing Tamiflu to those in need. N95 masks are also being provided as part of our containment strategy."
So far, around 25,000 birds have been culled as part of the containment efforts.
Director of Public Health Nilakantha Mishra added, "Thousands of chickens are dying due to the spread of bird flu. Samples are being collected from poultry workers and those keeping chickens at home. Another sample from a poultry worker showing cold symptoms has been sent to RMRC for testing."
