City grapples with rising onion prices, now at Rs 50 per kilogram

Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: Onion prices have soared in the city, putting consumers in a tough spot. While potatoes are currently selling at Rs 40 per kilogram, the cost of onions has surged to Rs 50 per kilogram.
According to sources, potato prices have remained steady at Rs 40 per kilogram, with no signs of a decrease anytime soon. However, onion prices have seen a significant spike, rising from Rs 35 per kilogram just a few days ago to Rs 50 per kilogram now, marking an increase of Rs 10-15 per kilogram in just two days.
Traders are attributing this sharp rise to a supply shortage, particularly for onions imported from other states. "The price of onions has increased due to reduced supply from Nasik. If the supply doesn't improve, prices may go up even further," a trader explained.
He added that the situation could deteriorate further if the supply issue isn't resolved soon. "Consumers should be prepared for additional price hikes, which could further strain their finances," he warned.
This surge in prices is hitting the common man hard, especially as they are already struggling with the high costs of other essential items.
