Cyclone Asani Weakens , Heavy Rainfall Expected In Odisha

Meteorological Center Bhubaneswar said that cyclonic storm Asani moved in west-northwest direction with a speed of 5 kmph during the last 6 hours. It is currently about 590 km south-west of Puri and about 510 km south-west of Gopalpur, Odisha. The system is expected to recurve on Tuesday night and move parallel to the coast in the north-northeast direction. 'The severe cyclonic storm has already started losing steam and it will further weaken into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours as it nears the coast and makes the recurve,' Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre Director H R Biswas said.
Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre Director further said that the gale-force wind speed will decline to 80-90 kmph by Tuesday night and to 60-70 kmph by Wednesday evening. The MeT Department has warned fishermen against venturing into deep sea till Thursday, as Odisha braced for heavy rain in the coastal areas.
Odisha's Ganjam Administration has announced the closure of all sea beaches in Ganjam including the Gopalpur Sea Beach for today and tomorrow .Meanwhile, 23 flights taking off and landing from Visakhapatnam Airport in Andhra Pradesh have been canceled on Tuesday due to bad weather. At the same time, Chennai Airport has also canceled 10 flights. These include flights to Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Jaipur and Mumbai.
Cyclone Asani will continue to move in northwest direction till the night of May 10. Thereafter, it will turn northeastwards from Odisha coast towards northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to weaken in the next 24 hours. The effect of the cyclone will be visible in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Bengal, Chhattisgarh and other states.
