Death toll rises to 15 in Puri firecracker tragedy

Bhubaneswar, June 5: Another victim of the Chandan Yatra firecracker explosion in Puri has succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Wednesday.
The death toll from the fire tragedy has now reached 15, as confirmed by an official press release from the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) of Odisha on Wednesday.
According to the release, the Puri district collector has arranged for Rs. 4 lakh in ex-gratia assistance to be paid to the next of kin of each deceased person. Currently, 12 patients are still receiving treatment in various hospitals.
The fire accident occurred on May 29 during the firework display for the 21-day Chandan Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri. The tragic incident resulted in serious burn injuries to approximately 30 people, including some minors.
Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has ordered a high-level administrative probe into the explosion, to be conducted by Additional Chief Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management and Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahu.
