Man gets life sentence for killing minor girl after attempted rape

Bhubaneswar, May 30: A Special POSCO court has convicted Sumit Minj, sentencing him to life imprisonment for the murder of a minor girl following an attempted rape.
The incident took place on February 2, 2017, in Kantabahal village under Talasara village in Sundargarh district. The 11-year-old victim was playing with her friends when Sumit lured her to a nearby jungle and attempted to assault her. When the girl screamed for help, Sumit tried to strangle her. Failing to kill her through strangulation, he then stoned her to death and beheaded her.
The POSCO Court in Sundargarh, after hearing the case, sentenced Sumit to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. If he fails to pay the fine, he will face an additional one year of imprisonment.
Public prosecutor Debasis Mishra stated, “The victim’s father filed a missing complaint the day after the incident, leading to the police discovery of the victim’s headless body in the nearby forest.” Judge Mahendra Kumar Sutradhar delivered the verdict after considering the testimonies of 26 witnesses.
