Odisha swelters as heatwave grips state: 28 places record temperatures above 40°C

Bhubaneswar, April 17: As Odisha grapples with scorching heatwave conditions, 28 locations registered temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher on Wednesday. The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar reported Talcher as the hottest spot in the state, hitting a maximum daytime temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius.

Following closely behind, Nuapada recorded a sweltering 43 degrees Celsius. Across 18 locations, temperatures soared above 41 degrees Celsius, while at least nine places saw the mercury climb to 42 degrees Celsius or higher.

In addition to Nuapada, both Boudh and Paralakhemundi reached a peak of 42.8 degrees Celsius. Angul and Nayagarh stood at 42.7 degrees Celsius, with Baripada trailing closely at 42.6 degrees Celsius, which had claimed the title of hottest place in the state on Tuesday with a blistering 43.6 degrees Celsius.

Bhubaneswar, the state capital, experienced a high of 41.7 degrees Celsius, while Cuttack recorded 41.5 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a further rise in daytime temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius across many areas in the next two days. An orange warning has been issued for several regions for the following two days, followed by a yellow warning for two additional days.

Attributed to prevailing northwesterly/westerly dry air and intense solar radiation, temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state, with some areas experiencing above-normal temperatures by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next three days.
