Natamandap restoration at Jagannath Temple Puri commences
Puri, Feb 23: The repair work on the Natamandap (Dancing Hall) of the revered Jagannath Temple in Puri started today.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has undertaken the responsibility for these repairs, scheduled to continue until March 19. Work will be conducted daily between 1 pm and 7 pm.
This decision was reached during a Chhatisa Nijog meeting held on February 21. Additionally, it was agreed that the Lion's Gate would open at 2 am, facilitating the smooth execution of temple rituals, including the Ratra Pahuda ritual at 11 pm.
The urgency for Natamandap's repairs stemmed from concerns raised by Lawyer N K Mohanty, amicus curiae in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the preservation of the Jagannath Temple. Mohanty highlighted a cracked beam within the Natamandap, emphasizing the imminent need for repairs to prevent potential accidents.
In a submitted report, Mohanty emphasized the criticality of addressing the cracked beam, which acts as a cantilever from both ends, posing a constant risk. To mitigate this risk, the ASI plans to install a support beam beneath the cracked one, ensuring structural stability and safeguarding against any potential disasters.
