Ranji Trophy: Odisha falls to Delhi, secures 6th spot in Group D

Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: Odisha suffered another setback in the Ranji Trophy tournament, succumbing to a convincing 7-wicket defeat against hosts Delhi on Monday. This loss marked Odisha's fourth defeat in seven Elite Group D matches this season.
The standout performer for Delhi was left-arm orthodox spinner Sumit Mathur, who claimed 9 wickets in the match and rightfully earned the Player of the Match award. Mathur's impressive bowling figures of 4/97 and 5/26 in the two innings proved instrumental in dismantling the Odisha batting lineup.
Despite a promising first innings total of 440, courtesy of centuries from Subhranshu Senapati (111) and Biplab Samantray, Odisha fell short as Delhi managed to secure an 11-run lead by posting 451 runs. Notable centuries by Yash Dhull (112) and Jonty Sidhu (105 not out) bolstered Delhi's position.
However, it was Odisha's dismal second innings batting display that sealed their fate, as they could only muster 133 runs, with their top three batsmen failing to score. Aasirwad Swain's 29 was the highest individual score, but it was insufficient as wickets fell rapidly.
With a modest target of 123 runs for victory, Delhi navigated the final day of the four-day encounter with composure, securing a comprehensive win with 7 wickets in hand.
Odisha concluded their Ranji campaign this season with just one win, four defeats, and two draws, accumulating a total of 12 points from 7 matches. They occupied the 6th position in the Elite Group D Points Table, with Himachal Pradesh trailing at the bottom with 11 points.
Madhya Pradesh led Group D with 32 points, followed by Baroda with 24 points and Delhi with 20 points. Jammu and Kashmir (18), Uttarakhand (17), Puducherry (13), and Odisha (12) rounded off the standings.
