PM Modi Inaugurates ₹169-Crore RBI Data Centre, Cybersecurity Institute in Odisha
JATNI, October 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) new data centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar, marking a significant development in India’s digital financial infrastructure. The facilities are expected to strengthen the security of financial systems, improve technological resilience and support the growing digital banking ecosystem.
The project, reportedly involving an investment of around ₹169 crore, has been established across an 18.55-acre campus. The new infrastructure is designed to support the RBI’s critical computing requirements and contribute to the secure and uninterrupted functioning of essential financial services.
With India witnessing rapid growth in digital payments, online banking and technology-based financial transactions, the demand for reliable data storage and processing infrastructure has increased considerably. The new facility is expected to play an important role in supporting critical payment and settlement systems while strengthening the resilience of the country’s financial network.
The data centre incorporates advanced infrastructure designed to ensure high availability, operational continuity and protection against disruptions. It has reportedly received Tier IV certification from the Uptime Institute, a recognised benchmark for resilient data centre design and infrastructure.
Alongside the data centre, the Cybersecurity Training Institute will focus on developing specialised skills in digital security, enterprise computing and emerging technologies. Its activities are expected to include professional training, research and capacity building in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and cybersecurity applications in the banking and financial services sector.
The institute is expected to help financial institutions respond to evolving cyber threats, protect sensitive customer information and strengthen safeguards against digital fraud. As financial services become increasingly dependent on technology, developing trained cybersecurity professionals has emerged as an important priority for India's banking industry.
Several senior dignitaries attended the inauguration, including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Odisha Governor Brajmohan Ram, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram and Odisha Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida.
The foundation stone for the project was laid by former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22, 2023. Jatni was selected for the facility after consideration of factors including geographical stability and its suitability for critical infrastructure.
The establishment of the RBI facility is also expected to enhance Odisha’s profile as a destination for technology-driven investment and institutional infrastructure. The project could generate opportunities for specialised employment, technical training and associated services, although the scale of these benefits will depend on future operations and recruitment.
The Jatni facility is the RBI’s second data centre, following its existing centre in Navi Mumbai. Its inauguration represents another step towards strengthening the technological foundations of India's financial system.
By bringing together advanced computing infrastructure and specialised cybersecurity training, the project is expected to contribute to more secure, reliable and resilient digital financial services across the country.
