Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi Woos Investors at India Chem 2026, Pushes Chemical Industry Growth
Mumbai, October 22: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has showcased the state’s industrial potential at India Chem 2026, inviting domestic and international investors to explore opportunities in the chemicals and petrochemicals sectors. The initiative aims to strengthen Odisha’s industrial base, attract large-scale investments and generate employment through the development of new manufacturing industries.
The 14th edition of India Chem 2026 is being held in Mumbai from October 22 to 24 under the theme “Advantage Bharat: An Emerging Global Chemicals Hub.” The event brings together industry representatives, policymakers, investors and business leaders to discuss opportunities, emerging technologies and the future of the global chemical industry.
During the event, Majhi highlighted Odisha’s strategic advantages, including its mineral resources, coastal location, port infrastructure, industrial facilities and investment-friendly policies. The state government is seeking to leverage these strengths to establish Odisha as a leading destination for chemical and petrochemical manufacturing.
Global CEOs Forum Focuses on Investment Opportunities
The Chief Minister’s participation in the Global CEOs Forum provided an opportunity to engage with business leaders and discuss potential investments in Odisha. The discussions focused on strengthening industrial partnerships, promoting innovation and creating an environment conducive to long-term industrial development.
The state government is particularly interested in attracting investments across the chemical value chain, including petrochemicals, plastics, packaging materials and downstream manufacturing. Such industries could help increase value addition to existing natural resources while creating new opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Odisha is also exploring the potential of coal gasification as part of its broader industrial development strategy. The technology could support the production of industrial feedstocks and chemicals, although the viability of individual projects would depend on investment, infrastructure, environmental requirements and market conditions.
Investment Proposals and Employment Potential
According to reports on the state’s industrial investment programme, 56 companies have expressed interest in Odisha’s chemical and petrochemical sector over the past two years. The proposed investments are estimated at approximately Rs 1.93 lakh crore, with the potential to generate employment for around 1,12,324 people.
Of these proposals, 27 projects have reportedly reached the grounding or inauguration stage. These projects represent investments of approximately Rs 60,825 crore and have an estimated employment potential of 35,351 people.
The figures indicate the scale of interest in Odisha’s industrial sector. However, proposed investments and projected employment do not necessarily translate into completed projects or jobs already created.
The government is also considering the development of a dedicated chemical industrial park to provide suitable infrastructure and encourage companies to establish manufacturing facilities in the state.
Odisha Seeks to Diversify Its Industrial Economy
Odisha has traditionally relied heavily on mining, metals and mineral-based industries. Expanding the chemicals and petrochemicals sectors could help diversify the state’s economy, strengthen industrial supply chains and encourage the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.
The government’s participation in India Chem 2026 is expected to support engagement with prospective investors and highlight opportunities arising from the state’s infrastructure and industrial policies.
However, converting investment interest into operational projects will require timely approvals, reliable utilities, skilled manpower, environmental safeguards and efficient logistics.
With its participation in the three-day industry event, Odisha is seeking to strengthen its position in India’s expanding chemical manufacturing landscape. The success of the initiative will ultimately depend on how effectively investment proposals are converted into functioning industries, sustainable employment and long-term economic growth.
