Odisha's Rich Cultural Legacy Wins National Recognition Through 12 Artistes
Bhubaneswar, June 12: In a moment of pride for Odisha's cultural fraternity, 12 artistes from the state have been selected for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi honours, one of the highest recognitions in the field of performing arts in India. The announcement has been welcomed by artists, cultural organizations, and art enthusiasts across the state.
The honours were approved during a meeting of the General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the country's apex body for music, dance, and drama. The awards recognize exceptional contributions to India's rich artistic heritage and celebrate individuals who have dedicated their lives to preserving and promoting traditional and contemporary performing arts.
Among the selected artistes from Odisha are practitioners of classical dance, folk traditions, theatre, music, and other cultural disciplines. Their achievements reflect the state's vibrant artistic legacy and its continued contribution to India's cultural landscape. The recognition is seen as a testament to the dedication, creativity, and perseverance of Odisha's performing artists.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards are regarded as the highest national honours bestowed upon practising artists in the fields of music, dance, theatre, folk arts, puppetry, and allied performing arts. The award carries a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, a traditional shawl, and a Tamrapatra, symbolizing the nation's respect for the recipients' contributions.
In addition to the senior awards, several young artistes from Odisha have also been chosen for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, which honours emerging talent in the performing arts. The youth award aims to encourage young practitioners and provide them with national recognition at an early stage in their careers. Recipients of the Yuva Puraskar receive a cash award and a citation acknowledging their artistic excellence.
Cultural experts believe that the selection of 12 artistes from Odisha highlights the growing national appreciation for the state's diverse artistic traditions. Odisha is widely known for its classical Odissi dance, traditional music forms, folk theatre, and indigenous cultural expressions that have flourished for centuries. The state's artists have played a crucial role in safeguarding these traditions while adapting them for modern audiences.
The announcement has generated enthusiasm within Odisha's cultural community. Artists and scholars have described the honours as a source of inspiration for the younger generation, encouraging them to pursue careers in traditional and performing arts. Many believe that such recognition helps strengthen efforts to preserve India's intangible cultural heritage.
The achievement also underscores the importance of continued support for cultural education, training institutions, and artistic development programmes. With national recognition coming to a significant number of artistes from the state, Odisha has once again reaffirmed its position as one of India's leading centres of artistic excellence.
As the awardees prepare to receive their honours at a formal ceremony, the recognition stands as a celebration of Odisha's enduring cultural spirit and the remarkable contributions of its artistes to the nation's artistic heritage.
