Man kills mother over witchcraft suspicion in Mayurbhanj, arrested
Bhubaneswar, Jan 29: In a shocking and gruesome incident, a 36-year-old man allegedly hacked his own mother to death after suspecting her of practicing witchcraft and being responsible for his family’s misfortunes. The incident took place at Kalaraphulia village under the jurisdiction of Betanati police limits, sending shockwaves through the locality.
The accused has been identified as Tapan Singh, while the deceased is his mother, Raimani Singh. According to reports, Tapan lived in the same house with his mother and wife. A few months ago, Tapan’s wife reportedly lost a child while still in the womb. Following the tragic incident, Tapan allegedly began suspecting his mother of engaging in witchcraft, believing her actions had brought misfortune upon his family.
Driven by this suspicion, Tapan allegedly attacked Raimani with a sharp weapon in a fit of rage, killing her on the spot. Raimani’s screams alerted neighbours, who rushed to the scene and found her lying in a pool of blood. They immediately informed the police.
On receiving information, police personnel reached the spot, arrested the accused, and seized the body for investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the brutal killing.
