Naveen Patnaik condemns Puri gang-rape, slams BJP govt over women’s safety

Bhubaneswar, Sept 17: Leader of Opposition and BJD President Naveen Patnaik has expressed deep shock and anguish over the recent gang-rape of a young girl near the Maa Baliharachandi temple in Puri district, just 50 km from the state capital.
Taking to social media platform X, Patnaik said he was “heart-rendingly shocked” that such a horrific incident occurred so close to Bhubaneswar. He criticized the BJP-led state government, accusing it of failing to ensure women’s safety despite repeated assurances.
Patnaik alleged that the government is more focused on “theatrical displays of concern” than taking concrete measures to prevent crimes against women. Citing past cases in Gopalpur, Balasore, and Balanga, he said many victims and their families are still waiting for justice while violence against women continues unchecked.
He further warned that such incidents near prominent tourist destinations could severely damage Odisha’s image at the national and international level. Calling the BJP administration’s response “miserable,” Patnaik demanded the strongest possible action against the perpetrators and urged the government to restore women’s sense of safety and confidence in the system.
