Odisha Police warns of new phone scam involving foreign numbers
Bhubaneswar, May 16: On Thursday, the Odisha Police issued a warning to mobile users about receiving calls from foreign numbers starting with +92 on WhatsApp.
Using its official X-handle, Odisha Police advised the public to stay vigilant and avoid answering calls from individuals posing as police officers who demand money by making false accusations against their relatives.
This advisory follows an increase in reports of fraudulent calls impersonating police officials from various parts of the state.
Recently, cyber fraudsters have been using this tactic to deceive people, pretending to be police officers and falsely accusing their relatives of crimes. The Odisha Police urged people to remain cautious and refrain from sharing any personal information if they receive such calls.
Previously, the Department of Telecommunications, under the Ministry of Communications, had also issued an advisory. It warned mobile users to be cautious of calls from foreign numbers, especially those starting with +92, on WhatsApp. The advisory cautioned users against sharing information with callers posing as government officials threatening to disconnect their mobile numbers over alleged illegal activities.
