Dharmendra Pradhan seeks urgent safety measures on NH-49 in Debagarh
Bhubaneswar, Oct 14: Former Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has urged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Jairam Gadkari to take urgent steps to improve road safety and resolve traffic problems along National Highway-49 in Debagarh district.
In a letter to Gadkari, Pradhan highlighted the heavy movement of inter-state freight vehicles and other traffic on the highway, describing the situation as a serious safety concern. He proposed three major structural interventions to improve traffic flow and ensure safer movement for commuters and local residents.
Pradhan called for an elevated flyover at the Y-junction near Ambedkar Square, located at the beginning of the Debagarh bypass. The area witnesses frequent traffic movement due to the presence of key institutions, including the Collectorate, New Bus Stand and Women’s College. He sought a dedicated service road and an adequate highway lighting system to minimise traffic conflicts and reduce accident risks.
The former minister also urged the construction of an underpass and slip road at Birsa Munda Square to facilitate smoother movement of vehicles. Additionally, he sought the development of service roads, drainage systems and pedestrian safety infrastructure in populated areas such as Kala, Kandhal and Tileibani.
Sharing details of the letter on X, Pradhan said the proposed measures would improve road infrastructure, ease local travel and enhance safety for residents and commuters. He stressed the need for permanent solutions to address traffic congestion and safety concerns on the busy highway corridor.
