Amitendra Nath Sinha Appointed BSF Inspector General on Lateral Shift Basis
New Delhi, September 17, 2026: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitendra Nath Sinha has been appointed as an Inspector General (IG) in the Border Security Force (BSF) on a lateral-shift basis.
Sinha, a 2002-batch IPS officer of the Odisha cadre, was serving as an Inspector General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) before his new assignment. The appointment was notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on September 16, 2026.
According to the government order, Sinha will continue in the BSF assignment up to July 10, 2028. His period of central deputation is being counted from July 11, 2023.
Sinha joined the central deputation and was appointed IG in the CRPF in July 2023. During his tenure with the force, he was associated with responsibilities in the Odisha Sector, among other operational and administrative assignments.
An experienced police officer, Sinha has served in various positions during his career in the Odisha Police and central armed police forces. He holds LLB and LLM degrees.
His service record also includes significant recognitions. The IPS Civil List records that he was awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service in 2018 and the Governor's Medal in 2014.
The BSF, one of India's Central Armed Police Forces, is primarily responsible for guarding the country's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The force also undertakes a range of border-management, security and law-and-order-related responsibilities.
Sinha's appointment comes as part of senior-level postings and organisational changes involving IPS officers in the country's Central Armed Police Forces.
The latest appointment places the Odisha-cadre officer in a senior leadership position within the BSF, where he will take on responsibilities related to the force's operational and administrative functioning.
The appointment order was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, with the official IPS records providing details of Sinha's cadre, service history and previous central deputation.
