Neeraj Chopra Ruled Out of Asian Games After Ankle Injury

Star Javelin Thrower Ends 2026 Season Early, Major Setback for India’s Asian Games Campaign

NEW DELHI, August 29: India’s hopes of seeing star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra compete at the 2026 Asian Games have suffered a major setback after the two-time Olympic medallist was ruled out of the continental event due to an ankle ligament injury.

Chopra announced on Saturday that he would miss the remainder of the 2026 athletics season after suffering a ligament tear in his ankle during training. Following consultations with his doctor and support team, the Indian athlete decided to withdraw from all remaining competitions this year and focus on recovery and rehabilitation.

The injury comes at a particularly disappointing stage of Chopra’s season. The javelin star had recently begun showing encouraging signs of returning to his best form. At the Lausanne Diamond League, he recorded a season-best throw of 88.05 metres, finishing second. The performance had raised expectations that he would enter the Asian Games as one of India’s strongest medal contenders.

However, the injury sustained shortly after the Lausanne competition has brought his campaign to an abrupt end. Chopra will now miss not only the Asian Games but also the Diamond League Final and other major competitions scheduled for the remainder of the season.

The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. Chopra was expected to be one of the leading names in India’s athletics contingent and a strong contender in the men’s javelin throw. His absence is therefore a significant blow to the country’s medal hopes.

Chopra’s 2026 season had already been a challenging one. He returned to competition in June at the Doha Diamond League after a lengthy injury layoff and finished fourth with a throw of 85.69 metres. He subsequently won silver in Glasgow with an 85.83-metre effort before improving his season-best mark to 88.05 metres in Lausanne.

Despite the latest setback, Chopra has maintained a positive outlook. His immediate priority is now rehabilitation, with the athlete determined to recover properly before returning to competitive action.

The injury also highlights the physical challenges faced by elite athletes competing at the highest level. Chopra has previously dealt with injury-related interruptions, but has repeatedly demonstrated resilience and the ability to return to international competition.

For Indian athletics, his withdrawal means the spotlight will now shift to the country’s other javelin throwers. They will have the responsibility of carrying India’s medal hopes in the event at the Asian Games.

While fans will undoubtedly miss seeing Chopra defend his continental title, the priority now is his health and long-term recovery. Indian sports supporters will be hoping that the champion can complete his rehabilitation successfully and make a strong return to the international stage in the future.
