Shreyas Iyer Appointed India’s New T20I Captain Ahead of Ireland and England Tours

New Delhi, June 6: In a significant leadership change for Indian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian men’s T20 International team. The decision comes as the selectors announced the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, marking a new chapter in India’s shortest-format setup.

Iyer takes over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, who had been leading the side in recent assignments. The appointment is being viewed as a reward for Iyer’s consistent performances and successful leadership record in domestic and franchise cricket. Cricket experts believe the move reflects the selectors’ long-term vision of building a stable leadership group ahead of future global tournaments.

The 31-year-old batter has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence over the past year. Despite being out of India’s T20I setup for an extended period, Iyer continued to impress with both his batting and captaincy skills in major competitions. His ability to guide teams under pressure and maintain consistency with the bat reportedly played a crucial role in convincing selectors that he was the right candidate for the role.

The announcement also included the appointment of Tilak Varma as vice-captain of the T20I side. The young batter has emerged as one of India’s most promising talents and is expected to play a key role in the team’s future plans. The leadership combination of Iyer and Tilak is seen as a blend of experience and youth.

One of the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was the inclusion of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The youngster earned his maiden senior national team call-up after a series of impressive performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. His selection highlights the BCCI’s willingness to invest in young talent capable of making an impact on the international stage.

Several established names have retained their places in the squad, including Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. The squad reflects a balance of experienced campaigners and emerging players.

According to members of the selection committee, the decision to hand Iyer the captaincy was based on his leadership qualities, tactical awareness and recent performances. Officials believe he possesses the temperament required to guide a young and evolving T20 side through a demanding international schedule.

The upcoming tours of Ireland and England will serve as Iyer’s first assignment as full-time T20I captain. Fans and cricket analysts will closely watch how he manages the team and shapes India’s approach in the format. With a fresh leadership structure and a mix of youth and experience in the squad, Indian cricket enters a new phase aimed at strengthening its position in the global T20 arena.
