TVK Government Wins Trust Vote in Tamil Nadu Assembly, Vijay Secures Majority
The newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay successfully proved its majority in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, marking a major political milestone for the actor-turned-politician. The floor test, conducted amid intense political drama and high public attention, ended with the ruling alliance comfortably crossing the majority mark in the 234-member House.
Speaker JCD Prabhakar announced that the confidence motion received the support of 144 legislators, ensuring the survival and stability of the Vijay-led administration. The victory came only days after Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister following the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The trust vote was considered a crucial test for the TVK government because the party had emerged as the single-largest political force in the elections but did not initially secure a clear majority on its own. In the days leading up to the floor test, hectic political activity took place across Chennai as parties negotiated alliances and support arrangements.
TVK managed to secure the backing of several alliance partners, including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), IUML, and a section of legislators from the AIADMK. Reports indicated that multiple AIADMK MLAs either voted in favour of the confidence motion or abstained during the proceedings, indirectly helping the government strengthen its numbers.
The Assembly session witnessed dramatic scenes as opposition members from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) strongly criticised the government during the debate. However, amid protests and heated exchanges, several opposition members staged a walkout before the final voting process. Political analysts believe the walkout reduced the effective strength of the House and made it easier for the government to cross the majority mark.
Chief Minister Vijay addressed the Assembly before the vote and promised that his administration would focus on governance, employment, welfare schemes, infrastructure development, and transparency in administration. He also appealed to all political parties to cooperate in the interest of Tamil Nadu’s development and stability.
The successful floor test is being viewed as a major boost for Vijay’s political career. Having transitioned from cinema to politics, Vijay’s rapid rise has surprised many political observers. His victory in the Assembly and the successful trust vote have established him as a strong new player in Tamil Nadu politics, a state historically dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.
Supporters of TVK celebrated across several parts of Tamil Nadu after the results of the floor test were announced. Party workers gathered outside the Assembly and TVK offices, raising slogans and distributing sweets to mark the occasion. Social media platforms were also flooded with congratulatory messages from supporters and film fans.
Political experts believe the trust vote has provided immediate stability to the new government, but they also point out that maintaining unity among supporting parties will remain a key challenge in the coming months. The Vijay-led administration is now expected to focus on delivering its electoral promises while strengthening its political base across the state.
With the floor test victory, TVK has officially secured its position in power, signalling the beginning of a new chapter in Tamil Nadu politics.
