Sucharita Mohanty returns Congress ticket amid funding dispute

Bhubaneswar, May 4: In a surprising turn of events, Sucharita Mohanty, the Lok Sabha candidate from Puri representing Congress, has made the decision to return her party ticket. This unexpected move comes as a result of being denied financial support for her campaign, causing significant setbacks in her efforts to rally support within the parliamentary constituency.
According to sources, the lack of allocated funds severely impacted Mohanty's ability to effectively campaign, leading her to take this drastic step. In a letter addressed to AICC general secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal, Mohanty expressed her disappointment, stating that the denial of funding has hampered their campaign efforts significantly.
Mohanty, who transitioned from a career in journalism to politics a decade ago, emphasized her dedication to the cause, highlighting her exhaustive efforts to finance her campaign independently. Despite attempting various strategies, including public donation drives and cost-cutting measures, she found herself unable to gather the necessary resources to support her progressive political endeavors.
In her letter, Mohanty appealed to the central leadership of the party, urging them to provide the essential funds required for a successful campaign in the Puri Parliament Seat. She emphasized that the lack of financial support was the primary obstacle preventing them from mounting a competitive campaign.
The sudden return of Mohanty's ticket has thrown Congress into disarray, especially considering the impending deadline for the filing of nomination forms for the third phase of the upcoming polls, leaving the party with limited time to address the situation.
