Odisha Law Minister Vows Stern Action in Balianta Murder Case
The Odisha government has assured stringent action against all those involved in the shocking murder case reported from Balianta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. State Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan stated that the government will not tolerate mob violence or any form of criminal activity and promised that the accused would be brought to justice through a fair and speedy investigation.
The incident, which has created widespread outrage across the state, involved the death of Government Railway Police (GRP) constable Saumya Ranjan Swain after he was allegedly attacked by a group of villagers in the Balianta area. According to police sources, the confrontation reportedly began following allegations involving two women, which later escalated into violence. Swain and another youth were allegedly assaulted by a mob before local authorities intervened. The injured constable was rushed to hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
As news of the incident spread, police launched an extensive investigation into the case. Multiple teams were formed to identify and arrest those involved in the attack. Officials said raids were conducted in several areas, leading to the detention of a number of suspects connected to the crime. Police are also examining CCTV footage, mobile phone records and eyewitness statements to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the role of each accused person.
Reacting strongly to the incident, Law Minister Harichandan said the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against lawlessness and warned that strict legal action would be taken against every individual found guilty. He stressed that no one would be spared regardless of their social or political background. The minister also said the administration is regularly reviewing law-and-order situations across Odisha to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also expressed deep concern over the killing and directed senior police officials to conduct a detailed and impartial investigation. He instructed authorities to ensure that the culprits are arrested at the earliest and prosecuted under relevant sections of the law. The Chief Minister reportedly sought regular updates from police regarding the progress of the investigation.
The murder has triggered strong reactions in Balianta and nearby regions, with residents and various organisations demanding justice for the deceased constable. Supporters and family members of Swain have rejected allegations made against him and urged the government to ensure a transparent inquiry. They also demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible for the violent attack.
Meanwhile, security arrangements in the area have been tightened to prevent any untoward incidents. Police personnel have been deployed in sensitive locations, and officials are monitoring the situation closely to maintain peace and order.
The Balianta murder case has once again raised serious concerns about incidents of mob violence and public vigilantism in the state. Political leaders and civil society members have called for stronger awareness and stricter enforcement of law to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. Authorities have assured that the investigation will continue until every person involved in the crime is identified and brought before the law.
