Metro rail project in Bhubaneswar under review amid low ridership projections
Bhubaneswar, Mar 31: The proposed metro rail project in Bhubaneswar has been placed under review, the Odisha Assembly was informed by Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra.
The minister stated that the decision was taken after initial ridership projections did not meet expectations, raising concerns over the project’s feasibility and long-term sustainability. In light of these findings, the government has decided to reassess key technical and operational aspects before moving forward.
To ensure a comprehensive evaluation, an Inter-Ministerial Committee has been constituted. The panel will examine the project’s viability, financial implications, and alignment with the state’s broader urban transport needs.
Simultaneously, the state government is implementing the “Sustainable Urban Mobility Transition Plan for Odisha,” aimed at developing an integrated and efficient public transport system. The plan will play a crucial role in determining whether a metro rail system is the most suitable solution for the state’s growing urban mobility demands.
A final decision on the metro rail project will be taken after reviewing the committee’s recommendations along with findings from the mobility transition plan, the minister added.
