Doctor attacked by patient’s attendant at Bargarh CHC, suffers serious head injury

Bhubaneswar, July 20: A doctor on night duty at the Bargarh Community Health Centre (CHC) sustained serious head injuries after he was allegedly attacked by a patient's attendant with a stool in the early hours of Monday. The incident has sparked outrage among healthcare professionals, who have once again demanded better security in government hospitals.

The injured doctor, Dr. Sudipta Kumar Raut, a medicine specialist, was attending to patients around 2 am when the alleged assault took place. The accused, identified as Vicky Singh, a resident of Ward No. 14 in Bargarh town, had brought a child suffering from chest pain to the hospital.

According to Dr. Raut, he examined the child, prescribed medicines and instructed hospital staff to administer an injection. A few minutes later, the attendant allegedly asked him to check his blood pressure. As the doctor was attending to other patients, he requested the man to wait for about 10 minutes.

Dr. Raut alleged that the man suddenly picked up a stool and repeatedly assaulted him, causing a severe head injury. He later appealed for strict legal action against the accused and urged the government to strengthen security arrangements for doctors on duty.

Bargarh CHC Medical Officer Dr. Sarada Prasad Nayak said he rushed to the hospital after receiving an emergency call from Dr. Raut. The injured doctor reportedly suffered severe bleeding and vomiting and is being shifted to a higher medical centre for advanced treatment.

Police have registered a case based on the hospital's complaint, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
