IMD issues orange alert for heavy rain in Odisha; widespread showers likely over next seven days
Bhubaneswar, July 13: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next seven days, with heavy to very heavy rain expected in several districts. An Orange Warning has been issued for Kandhamal on Tuesday and Kendrapada and Gajapati on Wednesday, while many other districts have been placed under Yellow Warning for thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and heavy rainfall.
According to the IMD's latest weather bulletin, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely across all districts, with rainfall activity expected to intensify between July 14 and July 16. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are also likely at isolated places over the next five days.
On Monday, heavy rainfall is expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. On Tuesday, heavy rain is likely in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Nayagarh, while Kandhamal is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. On Wednesday, Kendrapada and Gajapati are likely to witness heavy to very heavy showers, with heavy rain also forecast in several other districts.
The IMD has cautioned that intense rainfall may lead to waterlogging, localised flooding, traffic disruptions, landslides in vulnerable areas and damage to standing crops. People have been advised to avoid flood-prone locations and follow official weather advisories.
The weather office has also warned of moderate to rough sea conditions along the Odisha coast till July 17, with wind speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
