Naveen Patnaik slams deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, May 25: Former Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal president Naveen Patnaik on Monday expressed deep concern over the worsening law and order situation in Odisha, particularly following recent incidents of violence in Berhampur.
In a strongly worded social media post, Patnaik termed the recent daylight attack on a youth with a sharp weapon at Ambika Nagar in Berhampur’s Badabazar area as “shocking” and “hellish.” He said the incident had once again created fear among the people of the state.
Referring to another recent assault case involving a youth and a young woman in Berhampur, Patnaik said the horrifying incidents were still fresh in people’s minds and had raised serious concerns about public safety.
The BJD president alleged that “goondaraj” was spreading across Odisha and claimed that criminals were operating fearlessly despite police warnings and encounter threats. He said incidents of violent crime occurring openly on roads and highways reflected what he described as the “complete failure” of the governance system.
Patnaik urged the state government to act immediately and take effective steps to restore public confidence and strengthen law enforcement across the state.
He also called upon the government to focus on ensuring citizens’ safety and maintaining the rule of law instead of delivering “big speeches.”
