Matrimonial scam: Pahala Police arrest man for cheating woman of ₹22 lakh
Bhubaneswar, Jan 15: Pahala police on Thursday arrested a man for allegedly cheating a woman of ₹22 lakh by creating a fake profile on a matrimonial platform and luring her with false promises of marriage. According to police sources, the accused contacted the victim through the online platform and gradually gained her trust by projecting himself as a genuine suitor.
To make his story more believable, he even introduced his younger brother as a reference, assuring the woman about his family background and intentions. Investigators said the accused later convinced the victim to transfer large sums of money, claiming the amount was required for marriage preparations and for investing in bank policies. Trusting his assurances, the woman transferred a total of ₹22 lakh over a period of time.
However, she later became suspicious and realised she had been cheated. She then approached Pahala police and lodged a formal complaint. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the accused and produced him before a local court.
During the investigation, police found that the accused had allegedly duped several other women in a similar manner by maintaining multiple fake relationships while posing as a doctor. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of his fraudulent activities and identify more possible victims.
