Bhubaneswar, July 17: In a tragic incident, a man strangled his mother to death in Talapada village, under the jurisdiction of Simulia police in Balasore, on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Basanti Mohanty, was a resident of Talapada village in Kanchapada Panchayat. Reports indicate that the accused, Arun Mohanty, the elder son of the deceased, strangled her under the influence of alcohol following a verbal altercation over food.

Arun’s wife, Kavita Mohanty, stated, “Arun, under the influence of alcohol, regularly physically abused everyone in the family, including me, our children, and his elderly mother.”

She added, “On Tuesday night, around 8:30 pm, Arun came home intoxicated and asked his mother to serve dinner. He demanded fish curry, but when his mother said she hadn’t cooked any due to lack of money, he started physically assaulting her and choked her by pressing her neck.”

Locals, upon learning of the incident, rescued Basanti, who was unconscious, and rushed her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The police arrested the accused after his wife lodged a formal complaint at the Simulia police station.
