Bhubaneswar, April 4: In a significant move, Congress leader Bapi Sarkhel tendered his resignation from all party positions, including his primary membership, in anticipation of the upcoming general elections in 2024.

Sarkhel conveyed his decision through a formal resignation letter addressed to Sarat Pattanayak, President of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee.

Reports indicate that Sarkhel's wife, Monideepa Sarkhel, along with her supporters, including Chhabilata, the vice-chairperson of Paradip municipality, recently joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

There is widespread speculation that Bapi Sarkhel may also choose to align himself with the BJD, following his wife's move.

It's noteworthy that Sarkhel contested as the MLA candidate from Paradeep Assembly Constituency in the 2014 and 2019 elections, facing off against BJD's Damodar Rout and Sambit Routray respectively. Despite his efforts, he faced defeat in both instances.
