Southwest monsoon likely to advance into Odisha within five days, says IMD

Bhubaneswar, June 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said weather conditions have become favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into Odisha over the next four to five days, bringing hope of relief from the prevailing heat and humidity across the state.

According to the Midday Weather Bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the southwest monsoon has already advanced into the remaining parts of the northeastern states, the entire Sikkim region and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Meteorologists indicated that the prevailing atmospheric conditions are now conducive for the monsoon’s progression into Odisha and adjoining parts of eastern and central India in the coming days.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places across all districts of Odisha till Wednesday morning. An Orange Warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph at isolated places.

A Yellow Warning has also been issued for several districts, including Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Dhenkanal, Angul, Nayagarh, Kalahandi and Rayagada, where thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected.

The weather office further stated that thunderstorm activity is likely to intensify from June 11, with widespread rainfall expected across the state. Heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Koraput and Malkangiri on June 11, while Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Gajapati may receive heavy rain the following day.

The IMD also noted damage caused by a Kalbaishakhi storm in Bhubaneswar on Monday, which damaged several roadside sweet stalls at Pahala and disrupted traffic on National Highway-16 after trees were uprooted by strong winds. Officials have advised residents to remain alert and follow weather advisories during thunderstorm activity.
