Two held with fake currency worth ₹8.47 lakh in Subarnapur
Bhubaneswar, April 15: In a major crackdown on counterfeit currency, police on Wednesday arrested two persons in Subarnapur district and seized 1,695 fake ₹500 notes amounting to ₹8,47,500. The arrests were made near the State Bank of India in the town area following a specific tip-off.
According to police sources, the accused were intercepted while moving suspiciously in a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in a busy market area. Upon conducting a thorough search, officers recovered a large quantity of counterfeit notes from their possession. The vehicle used in the crime has also been seized.
Subarnapur Superintendent of Police Narayan Nayak stated that the notes were confirmed to be fake as several carried identical serial numbers, a clear indicator of duplication. The suspects were initially detained during routine patrolling on Tuesday and formally arrested after verification.
Preliminary investigation revealed that one accused is a resident of Bargarh district, while the other hails from neighbouring Chhattisgarh. Police have also seized two mobile phones and are examining them for leads. The accused will be produced in court, and further investigation is ongoing to uncover possible links to a larger racket.
